Among beams and stone
Taberna Al Tulipán de Oro is inside El Portalón, one of the medieval buildings in the Old Town of Vitoria-Gasteiz. Wooden beams overhead, exposed stone walls and wooden tables: a place to eat without rushing.
The same old sign hangs on the façade, with its gold letters and the curling tulip that gives the house its name.
02The kitchen
In the name of the pig, amen!
The tablecloth says so and the menu confirms it: pig’s ear with Leiva peppers, crispy pork belly, pig’s trotters in Biscay sauce, Iberian pork cheeks and the chorizo al infierno, served flaming in its little clay pig.
Alongside the pork, classic casserole cooking: Rioja-style tripe, game, salt cod and stuffed peppers.
03Bar and dining room
Pintxos at the bar, tables in the dining room
At the bar, pintxos: battered pig’s ear, fried black pudding with spicy peppers or crispy pork belly with a glass of wine. In the dining room, the full menu and the daily set menu, with starter, main course, drink, bread and dessert.
To go with it, Rioja Alavesa reds, txakolis and a sparkling wine or two. And on the stone walls, charcoal drawings.
